The Guild
111 Queen Street
Charlottetown, PE

this town is small and The Guild are pleased to present “Reclamations” a group exhibition of works by Lenny Gallant, Renee Laprise, and Jane Whitten.

“Reclamations” is a group exhibition exploring the theme of reclaiming. In this exhibition the artists explore what it means to reclaim materials, ideas, and heritage into objects and images that speak to personal and global concerns.

About the artists:

Renée Laprise has been painting for three decades but it wasn’t until recently that she found her voice. Her newest work uses a bold and colourful style to reference her Métis heritage and art history background in order to tell her life stories in an allegorical way.

For the past twenty plus years Jane Whitten has been an experimental basket maker, knitter, crocheter, stitcher and general tinkerer. She gathers urban flotsam and jetsam and explore ways of reusing these materials to create forms and vessels. Underlying the experimentation with materials, techniques and structures, is her passion and concern for the environment. Reconnecting with the ocean environment and reconfirming her understanding of its fragility has been a powerful experience and one that has inspired the creation of this body of work.

Using Sheet metal as canvas from a collapsed hockey rink in St. Georges, Lenny Gallant is exploring ideas of worth and how all material, no matter the state, has a use. This sheet metal was the roof of the rink, and Gallant is attempting to raise the worth of the sheet metal using ink, paint, care and attention. The abstract landscape designs are determined by the existing rust and weather patterns left from 49 years of life. This new body of Gallant’s work is supported by a PEI arts grant. As a further extension of this project Gallant plans on creating a free outdoor hockey rink on the same footprint as the old rink.
