November 10 – December 20, 2021
Receiver Coffee Co.
128 Richmond Street
Charlottetown, PE
this town is small and Receiver Coffee are pleased to present “Get Well Soon!”, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Charlottetown, PEI based visual artist Donnalee Downe.
In Get Well Soon!, vintage hand embroidery is altered to juxtapose text excerpts from two collections disparate in tone and nature: A tongue in cheek rolodex of humorous things the artist has said aloud while alone in her Charlottetown home since 2012, and correspondence with healthcare professionals related to mental health diagnoses in 1998 and 2005.
Get Well Soon! has clear links to the artist’s past work with household collections and her arts practice as a whole which explores domestic labour. The work feels timely as we all pause to consider what it means to be well and what it means to be home.
