small town market gallery call for submissions

This town is small – Market Gallery   –  2016/2017 Call For Proposals

this town is small is seeking proposals for the 2016-2017 exhibition season in our gallery space at the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market, 100 Belvedere Avenue – Charlottetown PEI.

We are interested in progressive forward-looking practices; the fruition of innovative ideas; inventive approaches to artistic production; and work based on an articulate theoretical and/or critical and/or poetic thesis. We encourage and facilitate the presentation of curatorial and artistic works that have and have not been exhibited in this locale. We are enthusiastic about artists’ most recent endeavors and art forms that propel contemporary production and incite conversation.

The Farmers’ Market Gallery is located within the indoor seating and eating space of the market: the place where locals and visitors enjoy their food from the market vendors and socialize. The Farmers’ Market Gallery is unique in the sense that it is not a typical white cube gallery space – it is public space that is already rich in character and interaction.

Artists and Curators submitting a proposal should be aware that there is an element of vulnerability for the work as it is a high-traffic exhibition space where food and beverages are consumed.

Site-specific works that take into account the unique context of the Market Gallery will be given priority.

Background on the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market –
Farmers’ Markets are where town and country meet on Prince Edward Island. The Charlottetown Farmers’ Market was established in 1984 and has grown into a thriving entity and become one of THE spots to visit in town. Farmers bring their fruits, vegetables and plants cultured from the red P.E.I. soil; rural bakeries offer fresh baked bread and pastries; meat vendors sell Island-raised produce; fish vendors sell fresh fish and seafood; crafts people display one-of-a-kind handmade works of art; and our food vendors offer a wide variety of International and Canadian dishes, home-made desserts, preserves, and specialty products available to eat in or take out. This broad selection gives you a unique shopping and social experience where you buy directly from the producer.

Proposals are accepted on an ongoing basis
