A hands-on introduction to using power tools in an art practice. Learn how to handle drills, small power saws, and other tools with confidence, whether you're installing work, building structures, or experimenting with new materials.

This workshop is designed to be a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for artists of all experience levels. Participants will receive hands-on instruction on using power tools safely and effectively, with guidance from experienced facilitator Kelly Caseley.

This workshop is open to participants aged 18 and over. However, individuals aged 16-17 may attend with a signed parental consent form and must have a parent or guardian present for the duration of the workshop.

About the instructor:

Kelly Caseley(she/her) is a multi-disciplined artist living and working in PEI Canada. Caseley works as Head of Props Production at The Charlottetown Festival, and is a freelance Production Designer and Set Designer for both theatre and film. Her art practice typically involves large sculptural pieces that play with altering the perception of familiar spaces. She studied fashion design at the International Design Academy in Montreal, and in recent years returned to school to study Heritage Carpentry at Holland College. When not puttering about the house or workshop, she can generally be found wandering the beach somewhere thinking about the upcoming rhubarb season.

What to Expect:

  • A demonstration of key power tools, including the drill and impact driver, jig and circular saws, and routers, with a focus on safe handling techniques and their use in artistic projects and installations.

  • Hands-on practice with guidance and supervision.

  • Protective gear (e.g., safety glasses) will be provided, but participants must wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing suitable for a workshop setting. Long hair must be securely tied up.

  • The space may be noisy at times due to tool use. Ear protection will be available.

Accessibility:

  • The workshop space is the Hilda Woolnough Gallery at the Guild. The venue’s front left side door on Queen Street is equipped with an accessibility button, and the staff operates a wheelchair lift for accessible movement between the lobby, theatre, and gallery. All the restrooms are gender-neutral with accessible stalls. For any assistance during your visit, the staff will be there to help.

  • Seating will be available for those who need to take breaks.

  • If you require assistance with handling tools or other accommodations, please let us know in advance so we can support your participation.

If you have any questions about accessibility or specific needs, please reach out to Alexandra at info@thistownissmall.com so we can make this experience as comfortable and safe as possible for you.
